Kiswahili Lessons Fund-raising Run

Lawrence Opiyo ran in the SMH Half-marathon on 21 May, and is accepting sponsorship for the ongoing swahili classes.

Hi All
On the 21st of May which is a Sunday, I am registered for a 21.5 km race in Sydney.
Details are at http://halfmarathon.smh.com.au/. It is very unlikely I shall win the
prize money on offer:). However I intend to use the race to raise money for the
ongoing swahili classes for the young ones. I am therefore calling on all folk of
good will to help raise money for the classes by sponsoring me on a per kilometre
basis. If you are interested in this kind of sponsorship please contact any of the
committee members with your pledges - Mutuota - mkigotho@bigpond.com, Kariuki -
karitz40@hotmail.com, Joan nimus@bigpond.net.au . They will collect the pledges
after I run and I will do the running ? a clear division of labour and basic MoU.

Details of how the race went will be posted on this forum on a later date. For those
interested in an embellished version or on my training progress join me every
Saturday at ?my roco? for a an update as we share a drink ? on second thoughts may
be we could pass that money on to the Swahili classes.

Training update

Hi All
As the ozzies say - 6 sleeps to race day. I have been in training but in the last
week I step it up to a higher level. It is now being done at a "secure" location to
keep away the prying eyes of the "opposition" who might want to "steal" race
tactics. This week I am in lock down mode so the usual briefing at the "roco" will
not take place until after the race on Sunday. The race starts at 7:30 am.My bib
number is 1890. So watch out for no 1890 on the telly or radio!!

A big thank you to all those who are supporting the race. For those who haven't,
it's never too late. You can contact me or any of our committe members - - Mutuota
- mkigotho@bigpond.com, Kariuki - karitz40@hotmail.com ? Joan nimus@bigpond.net.au.
At the moment I don't have the resources to send a "chief" to grab your chicken/goat
if you can't pledge:).

Yes all this is being done for the swahili classes. If you think the plural of
"choo" is "machoo" you should enroll for a swahil class once we expand them to
accomodate adults in the near future.

Cheers
Opiyo

THANK YOU

Hi All
I finally showed up for the race on Sunday having had a good preparation. It was a 21.1 km race and all I had to do was put the tick back in nike. We all started off at 7:30 am and very soon we were all sweating it out - 90% perspiration, 10% mental. I was in a very patriotic mood and called a few runners "pumbavu" because they kept criss crossing in front of me. I also did explain to a few who cared to ask, that I wasn't from Sierra Leone. But as 'nyayo' used to say I remained vigilant to make sure no enemy of development discouraged me from finishing.

Okay time for the sponsers to cough up the chums. For Thomas who hadn't pledged because you weren't sure I was going to finish, my learned friends as quoted in the book "Law for Dummies" assure me it's still legal to do so after the fact. The race will be broadcast this Sunday on SBS at 11:00 am.

Thanks to the Kenyans who lined up around the finishing area to cheer me on and those who joined me at the Fish Market for a meal after the race. A big thank you to the sponsers as well. Till city to surf, see you guys around at my "roco" or the next bbq.
