The City to Surf race is on again on Sunday August 12 - register now for a fun day!
Once again, Lawrence Opiyo is running in aid of our Kiswahili school - if you would like to make a pledge please contact fundi@kenya.org.au. We receive approximately 2-3 enquiries a week about the school, so the more money we have to properly establish it (venue, pay instructors etc) the more likely it is to take off.
We have a new runner this year - Benson Mutuanene, who is running in support of a charity called "Kenya Aid" - you may sponsor his run here: http://city2surf.everydayhero.com.au/BM_Mutuanene
It is rumoured that KenyansDownunder are participating too, so a Kenyan 1-2-3 could be on the cards - watch this space.
It's only 14 km .. flat all the way except for a little bump called Heartbreak hill.
If you can't run, turn out on the day to cheer, or set up a welcome party at Bondi at approx 9:30 (the race starts at 9 and Lawrence anticipates doing it in 29:58).

training update from Opiyo
It is official that I will be participating in the 14km, city to surf run on 12th August. I received my bib in the mail last week, and will be also know as no. 8938, for those who may want to send salamus anonymously via ka ratio (radio). I have been busier than most Kenyan assistant ministers when it comes to training, both physical and mental. If you are wondering what mental training is, you are not alone, though I strongly advice you not to confess your ignorance. Well there is that book that Oprah recommended some time back - "The Secret". I hear it claims, you should focus on what you want to achieve. Given that I want to "win", not only have I been imagining I am going to win, but studying how the Ozzies own Princess Mary waves to crowds, cause I'll need to do just that when walking to the winners podium. I even have a better idea - send the book to Kibaki, and you know what, he'll tell us what party ticket he'll be running on after reading it.
In the process of running to Bondi, I hope to raise money for the Swahili School. As usual all pledges and payments should be sent to the association's treasurer - Joan Shikule. In the near future when they start the "Ngumbaru" section I will enrol as well. As you may have noticed, we from the Senator's backyard are notorious for "murdering" the language. When talking in swahili, we make inanimate objects assume life - e.g "Huyu baiskeli wetu ana puncture wawili" as any "mechanic" would tell a boda boda cyclist from Bondo. Some of us are even worried about "kumanyoko ya odongo", now that some enterprising individual from some part of Kenya I won't name, stole gabions from Kondele in Kisumu City, put there with Nyayo's help, so as to put up some 9 by 9 shacks. So keep the pledges coming. Anyway let me finish "chai okombe moja" which I am having with "njugu bila ngos" and may you all have a good week.
